  • The GRID91 GLOBAL COVID-19 Protest Tracker provides an overview of protests related to COVID-19 induced restrictions and national vaccination policies for the week of January 5, 2021 to January 12, 2021.

  • The week witnessed 12 protests in total. Of these, 1 was against COVID-19 restrictions, 5 were against both COVID-19 restrictions and governmental vaccination policies, while 6 were against vaccination policies.

PROTEST AGAINST COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS

AUSTRIA

Locals, numbering in the high hundreds, staged a demonstration in Vienna on January 8. They    were    protesting    against    COVID-19    restrictions    and    vaccines.    Participants gathered outside Weltmuseum Wien before marching on the streets. They held up banners and placards. The rally was escorted by police personnels.

BELGIUM

Locals, numbering in the mid thousands, marched on the streets of Brussels as part of a protest on January 9. They were demonstrating against COVID-19 restrictions and vaccine passports. The crowd marched from Gare du Nord railway station to Cinquantenaire Park. Scuffles broke out between the police and protesters at the end. Over 30 were arrested on the spot.

DENMARK

Supporters of the ‘Men in Black’ group marched on the streets of Copenhagen as part of a demonstration on January 9. They were rallying against COVID-19 restrictions and vaccines. Participants, numbering between mid and high hundreds, held up banners and flags as they walked. Some beat drums and held up torches. The rally was escorted by police personnels.

GERMANY

Locals, numbering in the high hundreds, gathered for a protest in Munich on January 5. They were demonstrating against COVID-19 restrictions. Kaufingerstrasse and Marienplatz were blocked as a result of the demonstration. A heavy police presence was witnessed at the protest site. Some protestors were arrested by the police.

Tens of thousands of locals held rallies across the country on January 8. They were protesting against COVID-19 restrictions and vaccinations. Demonstrations were witnessed in the cities of Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Ansbach, Frankfurt and Magdeburg. The protestors marched on the streets holding up placards and banners.

Tens of thousands of locals staged protests across the country on January 10. They were rallying against newly strengthened COVID-19 restrictions and vaccinations. Protests were observed in the cities of Berlin, Nuremberg, Bautzen, Brunswick, Bonn, Leipzig, Rostock, Freiberg, Frankfurt and Cologne. Participants in the low thousands, marched on the street holding up placards and banners. Scuffles were witnessed between the police and the protestors in Rostock, Leipzig and Bautzen.

PROTEST AGAINST VACCINATION POLICIES

The protests against COVID-19 vaccination policies in Germany on January 8 and 10, Brussels (Belgium) on January 9, in Copenhagen (Denmark) on January 9 and in Vienna (Austria) on January 8 were held in tandem with protests against COVID-19 restrictions.

AUSTRALIA

Locals, numbering in the low hundreds, marched on the streets of Melbourne as part of  a protest on January 8. They were rallying against the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines for children. The participants held up flags and banners as they walked.

FRANCE

Protestors, numbering in the high thousands, staged a demonstration in Paris on January 8. They were rallying against COVID-19 vaccines and passports. Supporters of the ‘The Patriots’ and Yellow vest activists marched on the streets holding up placards and flags.

GERMANY

Locals, numbering in the mid hundreds, held a rally in Nuremberg, Bavaria on January 7. They were protesting against COVID-19 vaccines. The crowd split off into smaller groups as they marched through the town centre. The rally was followed by police personnels.
A similar protest was organised on the same day in Viersen, North Rhine-Westphalia. Participants, numbering in the high hundreds, marched through the city streets. They held up placards and flags.

ISRAEL

Locals, numbering in the high dozens, gathered for a protest in Ra’anana on January 8. They were protesting against vaccine passports. Participants rallied outside the house of the Prime Minister. They held up placards and raised slogans to express their opposition.

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Locals, numbering in the high dozens, staged a protest in Albany, New York on January 5. They were demonstrating against vaccine mandates. The participants held up national flags and signs.
